Aging in C. elegans |

The purpose of the datasets C. elegans muscle aging and Terminal bulb aging is to deduce the age of the nemathode based on images of muscles and the pharynx terminal bulb (part of the eating aparatus).
Images of C. elegans were taken using a light microscope at different ages. These datasets are highly difficult to classify manually.
The images are divied into groups based on their chronological age, rather than the morphological age which is an unknown. Note that the morphological and chronological ages are not fully correlated.
The variability among individuals as they age is well known in many species, and is seen in this dataset even though the individuals are gnetically identical and live in a controlled laboratory environment.
Unlike with the other image datasets in IICBU2008, the experimental goal is not to classify the images with high accuracy, but to compute a morphological age - a continuous variable which should be strongly correlated with chronological age. C. elegans muscle aging: 20x fluorescence microscopy images of C. elegans nematodes stained with phalloidin to visualize actin in muscles.

Terminal Bulb is a dataset of DIC (differencial inteference contrast) 20x microscopy images of the pharynx terminal bulb of C. elegans at different ages (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 days). DIC images are notoriously difficult to process using standard image analysis techniques.
